Civil Technologist (Junior)

HELIX Engineering Ltd. is an Alberta based Civil Engineering consulting firm that specializes in municipal engineering, land development, transportation engineering and rail.

We are currently seeking a Civil Engineering Technologist (Junior) to join our team.  This position will present many opportunities on a variety of tasks and our expectation will be for the candidate to develop proficient skills in all areas of project delivery, including preparing studies, designs, cost estimates, specifications, contract documents, construction management, and construction inspection.

Responsibilities:

  • Resident inspection of construction activities including;

    – Interpret and understand construction drawings and specifications and monitoring construction to confirm adherence to them.
    – Document daily construction activities, communications, meetings, and schedules in daily written reports.
    – Ensuring that health and safety policies are adhered to on all sites.

  • Providing support as part a design team under the direction and leadership of senior designers.
  • Providing topographic and construction layout surveys with GPS and/or total station survey equipment.
  • Assist in preparing quantity takeoffs and construction costing.
  • Delivering projects on budget and within identified schedules.
  • Assisting with inspections and preparing documents required for approvals, assisting with cost estimates, tender documents and contracts

Qualifications

As the ideal candidate, you are a new or recent graduate of an accredited Civil Engineering Technology program or equivalent with up to 5 years of experience.

Given the variety of project needs and a desire to find the right person to fit within our team, we will consider candidates with a range of experience, education, and background in land development, transportation, and/or municipal infrastructure detailed design and production.  In particular, we are looking for the following skills, strengths and interests:

  • Excellent communicator with effective organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D software and MS Office suite is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel and work away from the office location for up to a week at a time.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and weekends when required
  • Construction survey experience is considered an asset
  • Commitment to ongoing personal and professional development

Position will include both field and office work.  Office environment involves working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements as well as minor physical labour.
