The Role:

As a Materials Technologist at HELIX, you will be responsible for conducting and coordinating laboratory and field testing of soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete to ensure compliance with project specifications and provincial standards. This is a field role, where you will be required travel to and stay at the project’s locations for extended periods of time during different phases of work. You will work closely with contractors, project managers, engineers, and other parties to maintain quality assurance, resolve material-related issues, and support successful project delivery.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform field and laboratory testing of roadway civil construction materials such as soil, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete to ensure they meet specifications and standards.
  • Conduct Quality Assurance (QA) / Quality Control (QC) on materials during active construction projects and ad-hoc services.
  • Set up and maintain laboratory equipment, record test data accurately, and prepare daily testing reports to deliver to the project manager and client.
  • Coordinate with site teams (contractors, sub-contractors, engineering consultants) to schedule testing, discuss material quality issues and testing results.
  • Ensure all tests follow the relevant standards (ASTM, ATT, AASHTO, CCIL, etc.)
  • Support continuous improvement of testing procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma or certificate in Civil Engineering Technology, a related field, or equivalent experience (2-3 years).
  • Knowledge and experience in construction materials testing procedures.
  • Experience with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors’ (TEC) Testing procedures (ATT) or similar ASTM procedures.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
